How can I make my violin quieter when I practice so I don't annoy my roommates and neighbours?

There are two primary methods I can recommend to temporarily reduce your instrument's volume.

1. Use an instrument mute

A mute is a super handy accessory you can easily apply to your bridge to significantly reduce the volume of your violin.

Our Ultra USA Practice Mute is the best option as has the maximum muting properties. The product description lists a (funny) variety of environments where you can benefit from using a mute.

The best part of this solution is how mutes are quite affordable AND easy to install/remove.

In a pinch you can use springy clothespins attached to either side of your bridge. It's not as ideal as a proper rubber mute, but it's better than waking sleeping babies or annoying cranky landladies.

2. Use a bow with no rosin on the hair

Without rosin on the hairs, they cannot grab the string and cause it to vibrate. The bow hairs will slide along and make very little sound.

The effect is particularly effective if you clean your strings with 99% isopropyl alcohol (just be VERY cautious with solvents near your violin and keep it only to the strings). Without rosin on the strings, the bow will not have any grip, and thus no volume.

*Similarly you can work with a secondary, practice instrument. Ideally you can purchase what many call a "campfire fiddle," one of a low value and quality so you won't mind taking it camping. Then you fill the hollow body through the f-holes with an insulating spray foam so it will no longer amplify the vibrations.

I only ask that you do this with a disposable violin of no value as it would break my heart to see a quality violin sonically-neutered.
