What is peg compound and do I need it?

As with our polish question, the answer depends on the age and condition of your instrument.

Peg compound, also called peg dope, peg paste, and peg stick, is a lubricating substance that is applied to the part of the peg that touches the peg box and minimizes friction while simultaneously helping hold the peg in place.

Our peg compound is made with pure, natural beeswax and no added abrasives. It is most helpful on instruments in humid areas where violin wood swells and makes it harder to turn pegs to tune, or in super dry regions where violin wood shrinks and causes pegs to slip.

None of our instruments will require application of peg compound for quite some time as we apply it during our world-class setup and personal testing prior to shipping. But having peg compound on hand can be helpful for annual maintenance years down the line when the pegs are either sticking or slipping.

Just note that a little goes a long way. Hence our conveniently small peg compound sticks will last you for a very long time.

Our peg compound product page has more details about peg compound and how our more natural formula is superior to other brands with superfluous packaging. See it here.
